More out of this world funk from The Natural Yogurt Band (audio)

The Natural Yogurt Band are the kind of “modern funk” band that’s right up my alley. Sure they’re funky as hell, as evident by the skittering hi-hat, slop-funk drums that open up this track “This Way or That Way”, and they seemingly draw from numerous different older genres like funk (natch), jazz, psychedelic, library, and even a bit of old school electronic music. But like all the best bands in this genre, they use the sounds of old only to give themselves a template, rather than outright trying to recreate those classic bands and sounds.

The vibes (both the instrument and the general feel of the song) really give this song a rather, lazy stroll down the street of a city on a sunny, accompanied by an absolutely perfect walking bass line. But midway through the song, the song takes a dark turn down an seedy alley as a very ominous string section and piano melody take over the mood of the song. But after that brief little detour, it’s all peaches and cream again before slipping back in to the darkness to finish things off. It’s a beautiful little track that packs in so much musical imagination its almost unbelievable that the track is only 3 minutes long. Definitely can’t wait to check out the rest of this 7″.

Head over to the The Natural Yogurt Band’s Bandcamp for more info about this rather intriguing little 7″ project!
