Noisy funk from Funk Night Records (audio)
If I haven’t made inherently obvious now, I tend to gravitate towards music that’s a little bit weird. So while a lot of Funk Night Releases have been featured on this blog, there’s a lot I’ve just left off because they’re just a little too straight forward for my taste (not that there’s anything wrong with that). That being said, this track “Ume” from Plop is exactly the sort of stuff I look for when it comes to any kind of music; off-kilter drums, tons of weird textures, sounds, and instrumentation, and an almost punk rock esthetic where it seems like the musicians are both extremely skilled and amateur at the same time. The drums have a very improvised feel to them, as it sounds like the drum is still trying to decide which part of the kit to utilize throughout the song. The guitar and other instrumentation seem more determined to make as much noise as humanly possible. Thankfully though, the song still has a strong enough groove to carry it to the end so it all kind of works out in the end. This track may not be for everyone, but it’s definitely up my alley.
Plop’s “Ume” b/w “Enu” 7″ is out now on Funk Night Records.
