More great jazz from BBE (audio)
In general, 2018 has been a great year for jazz. Between all the great new artists offering a fresh take on the genre and all the excellent reissues that have been coming out on numerous different labels, it really feels like a revival of the once-thought-dead genre is in full swing. And of all the labels out there doing their part for keeping the genre alive, BBE seems like they’re at the forefront, especially with the release of their exceptional J Jazz compilation earlier this year. So it seems like this new reissue, done in collaboration with the record digging master Amir Abdullah a.k.a DJ Amir from Kon & Amir, will likely continue this trend.
This track “Nguzo Saba (Struggle)” is definitely on the more “adventurous” end of the jazz spectrum, with some truly “out there” solos and arrangements that venture close to the edge of free jazz but never fully cross the line. So if you’re looking for groove-laden, easy to digest jazz, you definitely won’t find that here. But what you will find is some truly unique, dynamic, hectic, sometimes harsh, sometimes beautiful, and ultimately rewarding if you’re willing to give it a chance. Not for the faint of heart to say the least.
