NEW MUSIC: Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band – Xxplosive b/w Burn

Those funky German steel drum boys are back! (audio)

Over a string of excellent seven inch releases, plus the release of their album in 2016, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band have made a name for themselves with their funky reinterpretations of classic hip-hop and funk songs. And now with this new seven inch, it looks like this tradition will continue. “Xxplosive” should be immediately recognizable to anyone who has listened to hip-hop in the last twenty years, with the original track’s undeniable hook given the Caribbean treatment via some steel drums, as well as featuring a whole of other instruments including some tasteful horn lines, some light finger piano, reggae-esque drums, and a beautiful little guitar line that complements the steel drums so perfectly. On the flip, you have a cover of Mobb Deep’s “Burn”, which picks up the tempo into boom-bap-ish territory, giving the drums a bit more punch while still keeping in the style of music that the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band are known for. If this seven inch is a teaser for what these guys have in store for the new album, I can’t wait to hear what else is on it!

Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band’s new seven inch is out on July 7th on Big Crown Records and is available for pre-order now!
