The instrumental to Elzhi’s “Two Sixteens”, expanded! (audio)
Upon first listen, it might be easy to just dismiss this as “hey, isn’t this the instrumental to ?”. And you’d be right; it is in fact the instrumental to that song. But if you listen to entire thing, like you should, it’s that and then some. It still starts with those percussive pops, mellow, jazzy keys, and the some of the loosest drums in hip-hop. But halfway through, the song opens up into this incredible jazz breakdown that would give Robert Glasper a run for his money! My only complaint is it’s criminally short and I would love to see more ideas explored like this in a long song (or album even). Looks like we’ll have to wait until next year to find out about more about the man’s next long player. Until then, color me excited!
