Chanes really surprises with one of the freshest, if not one of the best beat albums of the year (music video/audio)
With a seemingly endless supply of beat makers around these days, it’s becoming harder and harder to find producers who really stand out. Chanes, a Detroit-based producer and signee to House Shoes’ Street Corner Music label, really broke the mold not just with this production, but is album in general. Many of the songs on the album fit the post-Dilla description: sloppy but neck-destroying drums and dusty samples. But where the album really shines on tracks like “Someone Else”, which contains elements of melodic, ambient electronic music a la Boards of Canada and L.A.-era Flying Lotus, and some bass music influence as well, for a concoction that just feels so much fresher than what I expected. If you’ve got a minute, check out the rest of the album for what has become one of my surprise favorite albums of 2016!
