Manifesto Records is reissuing a afro/jazz/funk classic that somehow slipped underneath my radar (audio)
It’s unfortunate that I don’t get a chance to talk about classic breaks and samples here as much as I’d like to, as it is kind of my forte. Luckily this new reissue of The Lafayette Afro Rock Band popped up on Soundcloud not that long ago so hey, now feels like as good of time as any to bring this track up.
“Darkest Light” should immediately recognisable to anyone with even a passing knowledge of hip-hop. That horn intro is absolutely unmistakable. But you would be mistaken for thinking that song is just a straightforward, repetitive funk groove (though their is definitely a little of that in here). Simply put: this song is an absolute instrumental freak out; squawking horns, squealing guitar leads, and a bunch of other musical textures that all add up to an orgy of sound and fury. Basically, the kind of stuff I like!
