Stop what you are doing right now and watch this (video)
I’m not entirely sure why I waited so long to watch this. Maybe it’s my decreased attention span coupled with this live performance clocking in at just under 2 hours that kinda intimidated for so long (this video has been up on YouTube for over a year now). But anyway, on this very lazy Sunday, I finally decided to sit down and watch this and I’m sure glad I did. Despite the current controversy surrounding Afrika Bambaataa at the moment, this is a hip-hop history lesson that everyone (yes, including you) should take. Running the gamut from old-school funk, breaks, hip-hop, latin, rock, and electro, it really does show how anything could be contextualised into hip-hop (this being the primary reason why I say it’s my favorite genre). It also must be stated that Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow are so crazy on-point with this performance, with some of the best and most creative scratching and mixing I’ve seen from the duo since Product Placement. What’s really incredible is how there really feels like a narrative thread that’s tying everything together; all the songs throughout the mix are rarely played for more than a few seconds, helping create this amazing patchwork that forms to make an amazing tapestry of music.
In short, what I am trying to say is: YOU REALLY NOT TO WATCH THIS. Like right now. Whatever you are doing at the moment, it is not as important as watching this. If you were never a fan of hip-hop or maybe think that all DJs are talentless hacks, this shit right here might change your life!
